Labor Day weekend marks the last hurrah of the amazing summer festivities. The summer is coming to an end and that means no more barbeques, beach trips, road trips, swimming, ice cream outings, etc. It’s hard saying goodbye to summer because that means fall will be upon us and then winter and it will only get colder and colder. No more nice, sunny, hot, beautiful days. So what will you do this Labor Day weekend will your last hurrah of the summer? Check out these 12 family fun Ideas for this Labor Day weekend!

1. Camping
This is a great weekend family trip and what great weekend to take this camping trip than Labor Day weekend. Pick out a National Park near you with some great campsites. And enjoy it with bike rides, swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, relaxation, and the best part, a campfire with whispering hisses, sizzling pops and the musky smoke smell and enjoying delicious toasted marshmallows and chocolatey smores.
2. Hiking
Looking for something to do outside since it will be getting colder soon and your outdoor activities will be limited? Try hiking this Labor Day weekend.
Do you have any great hiking trails near you? Pick one. Then put on those hiking boots, grab a backpack and pack it with snacks such as granola bars, trail mix, nuts, and make sure to take plenty of water. Once you are all set, head on out into the beautiful fresh air and feel the heat of that sun beaming down on you because who knows how much longer you will have that great weather.

3. Backyard Camping
Can’t go on that camping trip. Maybe the campgrounds are all booked up being a holiday weekend. Well you can still enjoy a great camping trip by turning your backyard into a campground. The kids will love it.
4. Labor Day Cookout
Do you plan a cookout with your family for Labor Day? Maybe your going to a family members for the cookout or maybe it’s at your house this year. Either way it’s a great way to enjoy family time for this long weekend before the end of the summer.
But if you are planning the cookout, a big question is what to cook. Here is a list of some great options.
- Hamburgers – A classic cookout food. Juicy hamburgers
- Hotdogs – Another classic cookout food
- Chicken Kabobs or Beef Kabobs
- Ribs – I have gotten into cooking ribs lately and this can be a great choice for Labor Day
- Steak
- Potato Salad
- Macaroni Salad
- Fruit Salad
- Corn on the Cob
- Green Beans
- Grilled Vegetables
These are just some great options for a Labor Day cookout. So fire up that grill and get cooking and enjoy your family!

5. Swimming
Do you have a pool or does a family member, friend, or a neighbor have one? Or maybe your going to a public pool, the beach, a lake or river for a dip in the water. Either way, if it’s hot out there this weekend, don’t rule out a jump in the nice cool water.
6. Bon Fire
Bon fires are definitely a summer staple and who doesn’t love a good bonfire, roasting marshmallows or cooking up some smore’s. So why not light up one last bonfire before the summer is over.
7. Beach Trip
Maybe you want to make one last trip to the beach before the summer comes to a close. Although going Labor Day weekend could mean more expensive, more crowded, or even all booked up. But it could be totally worth it to enjoy that salty air, warm, soft sand between your toes and splashing in the ocean or jumping those waves.

8. Have a movie night
Looking for a more laid back, relaxing Labor Day weekend, why not try a family movie night. If you have little ones, you can pick a cute kids movie, cuddle up on the couch with a snack and enjoy the movie together.
I do enjoy family movie nights. My son’s favorite movie night snack are apples. And I’m going to be honest sometimes I tend to fall asleep before the movie is over, but I still find it enjoyable.
9. Go to a Baseball Game
Are you a baseball fan? If so, get some baseball tickets and head to a baseball game with your family.

10. Have a Picnic
If you are deciding to just spend your Labor Day weekend at home and not attend any parties, try making a picnic for you and your kids outside in your backyard. You can still make some of those great choices for Labor Day that are mentioned above for a Labor Day cookout. Just make smaller portions for your family.
11. Go on a Bike Ride
Do your kids (or even you) like to ride bikes? Go on a bike ride this weekend. And if you don’t know where to bike, take your bikes to a park or an empty parking lot to ride. We live in the country so we don’t have any sidewalks for my son to ride his bike, so we tend to head over to the local church right down the street and let him ride in their empty parking lot.
12. Backyard Games
This an be great idea if you are having that Labor Day cookout. There are tons of great backyard games that you can setup for all your family and guests. One game that is always at our family get togethers and cookouts is cornhole. It is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
